Tankers

Custom Chassis & Commercial

When the nearest hydrant is miles away, the water rides with you. Rosenbauer builds tankers two ways — on the Commander custom chassis or on the commercial chassis of your choice — with the dump-valve and portatank package your response area demands.

Overview

One job — get water to the fire

A tanker (mobile water supply apparatus) exists to shuttle water where hydrants can’t. Rosenbauer approaches it from two directions so departments only buy the truck they actually need.

Custom Chassis Tankers ride on the Rosenbauer Commander cab-and-chassis — high horsepower, room for a big midship pump, rescue-style bodies and full pumper-tanker capability when the tanker also has to work as an engine.

Commercial Tankers put a purpose-built water body on the commercial chassis of your choice — International, Freightliner, Peterbilt, Kenworth — with an efficient PTO pump. Maximum water, sensible cost.

Every build is engineered to NFPA 1900 for mobile water supply, baffled for safe handling, and configured with the dump-valve and drop-tank hardware that fits how your department dumps and drafts.

Compliance

Certified to NFPA 1900

Every tanker Heiman delivers is built to the mobile water supply requirements of NFPA 1900 — the consolidated standard that now folds in NFPA 1901 for automotive fire apparatus.

Water Tank
Min. 1,000 gal

Certified capacity, combined if multiple tanks. A tank over 1,750 gal classifies the rig as a tanker regardless of pump.

Equipment Storage
Min. 20 ft³

Weather-resistant, enclosed compartment space for the required tanker equipment complement.

Hose Storage
Min. 6 ft³

Dedicated to 2½″ or larger fire hose; two 3.5 ft³ areas when 1½″ preconnects are fitted.

Suction / Supply
20 ft hard suction

Or 15 ft of supply hose when a fire pump is installed, so the tanker can draft and relay.

Fire Pump
Optional

Not required on a pure water mover; if fitted, the pump meets full pumper criteria (PTO or midship).

Dump & Fill

Line and dump configurations per standard — 10″ dump valves and fast fill connections spec’d to your operation.

NFPA 1901 (Standard for Automotive Fire Apparatus) has been consolidated into the comprehensive NFPA 1900. Figures shown are the standard’s minimums for mobile water supply apparatus; Heiman and Rosenbauer build to those minimums and well beyond.

Dump valve & portatank options

The parts that win the shuttle

A tanker is only as fast as it can dump and refill. Rosenbauer offers the full range of dump-valve and drop-tank hardware.

01
Power & manual dump valves
10″ dump valves in the position that fits your dump site — rear, side between the tandems, front of body, or behind the rear wheel.

02
Drop-tank (portatank) storage
Carry the folding drop tank the way you deploy it: manual tube, enclosed manual/power, vertical or horizontal slide-in, above a full-height compartment, or in the hosebed.

03
Poly & wet-side tanks
Lifetime-warranty poly or stainless wet-side tanks, baffled to NFPA 1900 for stable handling loaded or empty.

Quick dump & deck gun
Remote-deploying quick-dump chutes get the drop tank set fast; an elevated deck gun turns the tanker into an attack piece when needed.

Questions to ask yourselves

The answers to these shape the whole build. Work through them with your crew and bring them to the table — we’ll steer you to the right tanker.

A custom Commander chassis gives you more pump, more seating and full pumper-tanker/rescue capability, plus stronger resale — at a higher price. A commercial chassis (International, Freightliner, Peterbilt, Kenworth) puts the most water on the road for the least money. Your budget usually sets the starting point; we'll price both so you can see the trade.
Custom cab-and-chassis are built to order and take longer to deliver; commercial chassis are more readily available and typically build faster. If you're replacing a failing rig on a deadline, lead time can decide the path on its own. Tell us when you truly need it in service.
A pure water mover (nurse tanker) dumps and drafts without a fire pump and costs less. Add a pump and the same truck can also attack — a pumper-tanker. Decide whether this apparatus ever needs to flow its own lines.
Match the pump to the role: a small PTO pump keeps a water hauler simple, while a full midship pump makes it a true first-due engine. Bigger pumps add cost, plumbing complexity and annual NFPA pump-test obligations.
A pumper-tanker can earn both engine and tanker credit toward your ISO/PPC class rating — effectively counting as two pieces of apparatus. If you're chasing a class improvement, say so; pump size, tank size and hose capacity all factor into the score.
Measure your lowest obstruction — station door, bridges, tree lines on your response routes. Tank height, deck guns and light towers all add up. We spec the build to clear it.
A lot of older stations have 10-foot doors, which caps overall and body height. It's critical to know before we design the tank and superstructure so the finished truck fits through the bay.
Tight apparatus bays, short driveways and rural turning radii all limit overall length. Larger tanks and rescue-style bodies add length — we'll keep it within what your station and district can handle.
Bridges, culverts and posted roads set a GVWR ceiling in many districts. Water weighs about 8.3 lb per gallon, so a big tank drives axle, suspension and tire ratings. We keep you legal and stable fully loaded.
Matching the pump brand you already run keeps parts, training and service consistent across your fleet. We can spec the major pump brands — tell us whether commonality with your other apparatus matters to you, and we'll match it.
Stock trucks already in production can take months off your delivery date. Ask us what's available currently and we'll send you the current list.
